I can still remember when my father was working in the middle east during the mid 90s. Communication was a bit low key during those time. Telegram and snail mail were the best way to send messages and get in touch with your family back home.
Until, telephone companies offered services on domestic and international calls. It was not as smooth as today but, it was way better than telegram and snail mail.
Cellular phones then became popular during the early 2000. Text/SMS messaging became the norm in terms of telecommunication. Together with this, the internet also took over the world and the rest is history.
Right now, we have hundreds of messaging applications that we could download for free. We also have Facebook where we could constantly update our relatives and friends to what's happening with our day to day lives.
But, as we enjoyed all the social media platforms that we could find on our smart phones and computers, we also became slaves of it. We developed envy, self-pity and even learned to gossip because of it.
We are very much pleased with the convenience social media is giving us in terms of communication. Instant messages in text form somehow became enough for us to keep in touch with people. But, in my opinion, there's nothing more satisfying and heart warming than to hear one's voice over the phone.
