High Holiday, Yet Another 3 Weeks Covid-19 Lockdown

The spike in cases of Covid19 in recent weeks forced the Israeli government to impose a three-week nationwide lockdown, starting on Friday, to stifle the spread of the virus.

Everyone’s movement will be restricted to 500 meters from their respective home and all schools would be closed from all age groups.

Businesses and private sectors are allowed to operate with 50% working capacity. The public offices will be able to continue to provide services to people in a limited capacity as well.

Essential goods such as food and medicine stores will be opened for people to have access to. However, gatherings will be limited to 10 people for indoor activity and 20 people for outdoor events.

The country has recorded more or less 4000 new cases daily since last week. It is reported that 139 are in ventilators out of the 500 in a serious condition. The recorded death toll has reached more than 1000 since the start of the outbreak.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his team received a lot of criticisms on how they handled the virus and the economy. It is predicted that this lockdown may go beyond a three-week initial approval.

The finance ministry headed by Minister Israel Katz expressed their concern on the effect of this lockdown to the economy. According to him, this would cost the economy a whopping 20 Billion shekels.

On the other hand, Health Minister Yuli Edelstein contented that this is the only way to minimize the spread of Covid19 to the community and the whole country. Health experts warn that a dangerous increase in Covid19 patients in need of ICU care is imminent and the demand will take a toll on the country’s health care.

Members of the Ultra Orthodox community in the country also expressed their concern on how they would be allowed to operate during the holy holidays when a congregation of more than 10 people will not be allowed during the lockdown. Health officials warn that a gathering inside a synagogue will increase the number of cases hence it must be banned.

Health workers including the private caregivers will be allowed to work and must take extra precaution.

For Caregivers, if you are doing the grocery and buying of essential needs, it is important to talk to the family of your employer as soon as possible and talk about certain arrangements. You have to be prepared for any emergency that might happen in three weeks as movement is strictly limited.

Your good for 3 weeks food supply, essential needs such as toilet papers, diapers, wipes, emergency medications must be prepared before the lockdown on Friday. If you happen to be working with people who observe religious holidays, talk to your employer right away and arrange everything.

It will not be easy for everyone, especially to those who are with high risks, vulnerable employers. But, it always pays to follow the law and take extra precautions. Remember, the hospital right now is not the best place to be in. Take care of yourself as much as you take care of your employer.

Keep safe and Happy Holidays everyone!
