What is the Primary Importance of Caregiving?

As we grow older, our bodies slowly deteriorate.  This leads to illness and physical pain over time.  Thus, the need to take care of older people arises. Seniors who are unable to do basic daily activities such as bathing, preparing meals, and taking medicines for their illness need both physical assistance and emotional support.  Whether it is a family member or a paid caregiver that provides the support, caregiving is essential for the well-being of older adults in our communities.

Vulnerable older adults with disabilities should not lack the essential physical support they desire.  In the same way, those with chronic illness need extra attention and supervision. Family members or paid caregivers have to make sure that these older adults get the love and support they need.  This can be done by providing assistance to the various tasks the older adult needs help with.

Family, friends, and paid caregivers can provide physical support to the senior by preparing meals for the older adult.  Meals should be prepared in accordance to the nutritional requirements of the senior. By doing so, the elderly can enjoy the meal with added nutritional value for their health.

Second, caregivers can show their care by doing household chores and home cleaning for the older adults who are too physically frail to do it themselves.  This ensures that the elderly individual lives in a clean and safe environment. Third, caregivers can lend a hand to older adults who are scatterbrained by managing their medicine schedules and doctor’s appointments.  By doing this, it guarantees that the senior doesn’t miss or take any medication in excess. It also gives an assurance that the older adults’ health is given great importance. With proper caregiving, the senior’s quality of life is improved and made easy.

Caregiving does not only dwell with the physical aspect of an older person.  It also involves emotional support. Put yourself in the situation of the elderly and you may understand the mental and emotional challenges that come with aging. That is why caregivers should boost the morale of the older persons by giving them praises and words of encouragement.  Aging people want to be heard. The stories older people tell are priceless, and the wisdom they impart is precious. Show your empathy to the senior when they speak, and they will put their trust in you. Once the elderly finds you trustworthy, the communication between you and the older person becomes natural and pleasant.

With the right physical and emotional support, the elderly can feel valued and loved.  Be patient in giving them the care they long for. Some of them may reject your presence, but keep in mind that older people need nurturing just like children do.  Be steadfast in providing them support, and you will create a better relationship over time.
