Caregiver's Salary Update: The Commission for Foreign Minister's Labor Rights

Caregivers often ask: if the minimum wage is 5,300 NIS, why do I get a lower amount?

The following are 5 things you should know about your salary:

1. 5,300 NIS is the minimum wage in Israel.

2. In general, the "pocket money" you usually get each week (which is not mandatory) is part of your salary and is paid in advance unless the parties agreed otherwise.

3. The following can be deducted from your salary monthly by your employer (Attached is a photo showing the deductions of caregivers who work in the Jerusalem employees' patient residence):

•For medical insurance participation, the maximum deduction per month is 143.11 NIS.
•The living expenses are based upon the location of the patient's house and whether or not the patient owns it (79.99 NIS). As shown in the attached example, the caregiver worked in the Jerusalem area and the patient owned the home.
•Expenses for food - When the employee gives written consent in a language that he is comfortable with, the employer will deduct 10% of the minimum wage from his salary, meaning that the maximum deduction will not exceed 530 NIS.

4. Please note that the following information applies to Israeli caregivers and foreign caregivers alike.

5. For the purpose of determining the employee's social rights, the minimum wage (5,300 NIS) is the determining salary. This means that the percentage deducted from an employee's salary at the end of the employment is taken from the salary before all deductions have been made.
