5 Tips to Make Sure You Have a Life After Working Abroad

You have already spent years working abroad and now, you are ready to return home. This transition back to your home country requires the same level of planning and attention as you did when you decided to work overseas.

Here are 5 tips to make sure you have a life after working away from your home country:

  1. Identify Industries You Want to Work In

If you plan to return home, it is strongly recommended to keep an eye out on those industries or organizations you wish to work in, that is, if you still plan to continue working. To stay informed, you can follow them on their social media accounts, subscribe to their newsletters, and browse employment websites often. You can also set up job alerts that match your criteria so you can stay updated on the available positions and their requirements.

  1. Sharpen Current Skills and Develop New Ones

You need to freshen up your skills if your work abroad is outside your career. There are now plenty of professional development courses available online that give you the chance to hone your skills. Aside from keeping your current skills sharp, you might also want to acquire new ones to add more value to your resume that you can use to your advantage once you return home.

  1. Don’t Cut Important Ties at Home

It is also strongly recommended to keep in touch with all of your professional ties back in your home country while you are overseas. When it is time for you to return home, your colleagues in the past can be great sources for potential job leads. Thanks to platforms such as LinkedIn, it has become easier to monitor how others are doing in their respective careers.

You can also make time to contact former managers now and then if you have a good relationship with them to ensure that you stay on their radar. This is especially if you want to return to a certain sector or even to your former organization.

  1. Brace Yourself for Reverse Culture Shock

You might have already gotten used to your way of life abroad but when you get back home, a different kind of reality will welcome. You might want to learn more about reverse culture shock and learn from the experiences of others in advance. Doing so will help you prepare yourself mentally for the things you might have to go through.

  1. Save, Save, and Save

Once you return home from working abroad, it is easy to fall into the trap of spending time socializing and going on new adventures every chance you get. But one of the most important lessons to remember here is to plan your finances properly for what the future may bring. You might want to save enough to cover all your bases for a minimum of three months at home.

It is always an exciting thing to finally return home after working abroad and careful preparation is necessary to ensure a smooth transition.
