How to Stay Sane as a Caregiver

When the pandemic hit early last year, the whole world was forced into isolation. Together with this new normal is a problem with mental health.

Although, I can say that home-based Caregivers are kind of used to this kind of setup, there’s also a huge problem in taking the rest day and even a problem in taking a vacation back to their home country. And all of these are taking a toll on the Caregivers mental health.

How can you keep your cool and keep calm under pressure while remaining a devoted Caregiver? Here are some tips:

Don’t Abandon Your Me Time

Caregiving is not all about giving all of your time and forget about yourself. Think about your interests and your hobbies that help you relax and be happy. Whether you love to read, talk to friends or family, or crafting, free up some time during the day and do these things. It will keep you sane and in line with yourself. It will lift your mood and give you balance.

Have a Schedule Routine

When you are working as a home-based Caregiver, your job is routine most of the time. Make a schedule and manage your time effectively. This will help you have enough sleep and rest. Incorporate a few minutes for your physical and mental health. Exercise and sleep are vital necessities to keep you sane while taking care of your patient.

Don’t Do It Alone

The immediate family of your patient is your first point of contact. If you think you cannot manage some things by yourself, you can always contact them and ask for help. Do not force yourself to do it all alone because you might end up having more problems. After all, Caregiving should not be done alone. Part of your job is to let the Doctors, Social Services, and the family know the condition of your patient.

Limit Your Time on Social Media

Although these channels usually give us entertainment, it is still not a good venue to keep yourself sane. A lot of fake news and negativity can trigger anxiety and depression. If you want, you can watch a feel-good movie or read a book instead of spending your free time on social media.

Spend Time Talking To Your Family Back Home

Your family is always and will always be the reason why you are where you are right now. This is all for them. And there’s no better feeling than seeing them even just through a video call. Your family will always keep you grounded and sane. After all, they are your backbone and everything feels good when you know that they are safe and healthy.
