🇮🇱 Emergency Guide for Caregivers During Wartime in Israel
Dear caregiver,
This is not a normal time. We know it’s scary. Sirens, running to shelters, the news…
But you're not alone – we are here to help you.
This guide will help you stay safe, support your elderly patient, and also feel more confident during this difficult period.
🔔 What to Do When You Hear a Siren (Alarm)
The most important thing: go to the safe room immediately!
This can be a Mamad (protected room), stairwell, or safe area in the house.
Here’s what you should do:
-
Stop everything and help your patient move quickly to the safe room.
-
Take only essentials: phone, water, medications if possible.
-
Stay inside the protected space until there's a special announcement that you can leave the safe room. Important note: it's different than the previous time when you had to wait for only 10 minutes.
-
If your patient is in a wheelchair or can't move quickly – stay with them and do your best to protect both of you.
If you're unsure where the safe room is – ask now. Know it in advance!
🛌 Sleeping in the Safe Room
If possible, sleep in the safe room (Mamad) - both you and your patient.
It’s better to be ready – especially during the night when it’s harder to move fast, and of course when it happens a few times a night.
📵 Don't Go Outside Unless Really Needed
Please don’t go out just to walk around or go shopping. It’s better to:
-
Use delivery apps or ask the family to help order food, medications, or supplies.
-
Stay home as much as you can.
This keeps both you and your patient safe.
📱 Keep Your Phone Charged & Ready
-
Make sure your phone is always charged.
-
Keep a power bank with you if possible.
-
Prepare a small emergency bag with:
-
Water
-
Medications
-
ID card / medical papers
-
Flashlight
-
Snacks
-
💬 Stay in Touch With the Family
You are not alone.
Please talk to your patient’s family – ask questions, tell them how you feel, and let them know if you are scared or confused.
They care about you. You are not just a worker – you are part of the home.
🌍 Update Your Family Back Home
We understand – your family abroad may be worried.
-
Send them a message once or twice a day.
-
Let them know you are okay and staying in a safe place.
-
Explain that there is help in Israel and people are taking care of each other.
If you need help talking to your family – ask the employer or agency to assist with translation or video calls.
📲 Use the Home Front Command App
The official emergency app in Israel is called:
“Pikud HaOref” (Home Front Command).
Download it from the App Store or Google Play.
It gives alerts based on your location, and tells you what to do.
If you need help installing it, ask your employer or someone from the family.
💗 Take Care of Yourself, Too
We know you're taking care of someone else 24/7.
But don’t forget – your own well-being is important too.
-
Eat, drink, rest.
-
Ask for help when you need it.
-
You are doing an amazing job, even if it’s hard right now.
We believe in you.
We are here to support you.
Thank you for everything you’re doing.
🤝 You Are Not Alone – A Community of Caregivers
Across Israel, there are thousands of caregivers just like you – foreign workers caring for elderly people during a very stressful time.
You are part of a strong, caring, and supportive community.
Many of you are already helping each other with advice, questions, ideas, and emotional support.
💬 Ask, Share, Support
-
If you have a question (“Where can I find adult diapers near me?” / “How do I calm down my patient during sirens?”),
ask other caregivers around you or online caregiver groups. -
If you found a tip that works well (like a way to explain the situation to your patient, or a simple game to calm them),
share it with others – it may help someone else. -
Talk to friends who are also caregivers. Even just a quick chat helps.
Contact iSavta with your questions, concerns and tips and we'll share it with the community of caregivers all over Israel.
🧡 We’re Stronger Together
This is not something you have to go through alone.
When caregivers help each other, everyone is safer and stronger.
Together, we can get through this.
